What Makes "True IMAX 70mm" Different?
Most theaters branded "IMAX" project digitally onto a screen with a 1.90:1 aspect ratio. True IMAX film is a different machine entirely:
- The film itself: 70mm stock running horizontally through the projector, 15 perforations per frame (15/70). Each frame is roughly 10 times the area of standard 35mm film — the highest-resolution capture and projection format in commercial cinema.
- The full picture: the giant 1.43:1 screen shows about 40% more image, top and bottom, than the 1.90:1 digital IMAX crop. Scenes Nolan composed for the full frame only exist at these 25 theaters.
- The projectors are rare: IMAX film projectors are enormous, need trained projectionists, and each print weighs hundreds of pounds. That scarcity — not demand — is why only 25 U.S. theaters have the format.
Why Only 25 Theaters?
The Odyssey actually marks the largest IMAX film release ever. IMAX refurbished and installed additional 15/70 film projectors specifically for this movie — venues like Regal LA Live, Cinemark Carefree Circle in Colorado Springs, Cinemark Tinseltown in Rochester, and Providence Place joined a list that was only around 19 U.S. theaters when Oppenheimer opened in 2023. Even so, film projection remains a specialist operation, and the 25 venues above are the complete U.S. footprint. Demand has been ferocious — IMAX 70mm showings for opening weekend sold out at many locations months in advance.
Can't Reach One of the 25?
The film still screens in digital IMAX (1.90:1) at hundreds of locations, plus 70mm five-perf, Dolby Cinema, and standard formats. You'll see the same movie — just not the full 1.43:1 frame Nolan shot. Check imax.com for the format closest to you.

Methodology & Sources
The 25-theater list reflects the U.S. venues screening The Odyssey in 15/70 IMAX film as of the July 17, 2026 release, cross-verified against IMAX's official listings and multiple press reports. Theater coordinates and addresses were queried from the Overture Maps Foundation places dataset (release 2026-06-17.0) using DuckDB; a few venues appear in Overture under former operator names (e.g., the Providence and San Antonio locations), and we show the current operator.
