How this statistic is built

Definition

E-commerce sales as a percentage of total retail sales, seasonally adjusted. E-commerce sales are sales of goods and services where the buyer places an order (or negotiates price and terms) over the internet or another online system.

Limitations

As of the April 2025 annual revision the series covers employer firms only (nonemployers are excluded, aligned to the Annual Integrated Economic Survey), which restated the full history — do not splice pre-2025 vintages onto this series.
